Recruiting Timeline
Year One
Freshman Year
- Go watch college games at all levels
- Create your College Fit Finder profile through Arlington
- Schedule a meeting with your guidance counselor to plan your coursework and GPA goals
- Engage in extracurricular activities — clubs, school groups, volunteer opportunities
- If a sibling is visiting colleges, tag along to get a feel for campus life
Year Two
Sophomore Year
- Learn recruiting basics and what to expect from coaches via College Fit Finder
- Begin contacting college coaches and sending your competition schedule
- Make a professionally crafted highlight video and upload it to your profile
- Attend college campuses and games to gauge realistic program fit
- Take your PSAT in October (if offered); attend college fairs and Arlington's college seminar
Year Three
Junior Year
- Register for the NCAA Eligibility Center no later than the beginning of 11th Grade
- You are eligible for Official Visits — where the college pays for your visit
- Keep your College Fit Finder profile active and updated before every event
- Register for SAT/ACT and attend college fairs and nights
- After September 1st of junior year, coaches can contact you directly
- Identify 10–15 schools and plan visits to your top 5 choices; update your highlight video
Year Four
Senior Year
- Continue proactive outreach through College Fit Finder
- Verify your eligibility status with the NCAA
- Follow up with coaches to know where you stand — stay organized and focused
- Continue college visits into the fall and narrow your search to 2–5 schools
- Research application deadlines; consider early decision pros and cons
- Submit your FAFSA in January to determine financial aid eligibility
Prepare for Your Visit
College Visit Guide
You only have one chance to make a first impression. Research each school thoroughly and dress smart casual. Below are key items to cover during your visit.
Visit Checklist
- Schedule appointments with admissions officer, financial aid office, and soccer coach(es)
- Bring your player resume and video footage
- Schedule a full campus tour
- Research athletics, academics, and financials before you arrive
- Bring an unofficial high school transcript
- Sit in on several classes while on campus
- Eat at the dining hall — preferably with current players
- Check facilities: library, student center, dorms
- Talk to students about what they love and what they don't
Questions for the Coach
- How many players do you keep on the roster? How many travel to away games?
- What position will I play and who am I competing against?
- Do you see me as a starter or role player?
- Will I be redshirted my first year?
- What are your academic expectations? What does the training schedule look like?
Questions for Admissions
- What percentage of student-athletes and soccer players graduate?
- What academic support is available for student-athletes?
- How much financial aid is available? What does the scholarship cover?
- Are there restrictions on scheduling classes around practice?
- Will the scholarship be honored if there is a coaching change?
