Differences between the ASA referee class
and the USSF referee class?
- The Arlington Soccer Association (ASA) Youth Referee Class:
ASA sponsors a local ref clinic, the ASA youth referee class, that results in
a certification to officiate U8-U10, 5v5 recreation games only.
While the
course is primarily for youth, all ages are invited.
ASA ref pay is $14 per game . For each season when a ref does 8 ASA
recreation 5v5 matches, he or she gets an increase in pay per game.
The ASA
class is offered two times per year, just before the start of the season, and
it includes a field practice session.
Minimum age is 13.
The youth refs are
immediately eligible to do 'center' in 5v5 games. Most new ASA refs start with
U-8 or U-9 games. Our more senior youth ASA refs who officiate U-10, 5v5 ASA
recreation soccer matches are paid $20 per game. No annual recertification is
required.
- The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Class
The USSF "Referee 8" class (often referred to as the beginning course for
center refs) is currently offered in Arlington once per year. (The course is
offered other times elsewhere in Virginia.)
USSF certified referee 8's who
have taken the ASA course and officiate ASA 5v5 rec games earn a $2 premium
per game.
USSF refs are eligible to officiate anywhere in the U.S. based on
league rules.
Most leagues and most assignors in Virginia use as center
referees only officials who are a minimum of 16 years old. USSF certified refs
who are younger than 16 most frequently are assigned Assistant Referee (AR)
responsibilities.
For ASA referees who officiate eight (8), 5v5 games in the fall season, the
ASA will pay the first year's USSF registration fee of $45 ($25 national and
$20 state) if they take the Arlington USSF course. Arlington Soccer
Association does not pay for the required annual recertification.
Special Note: In both classes, we try to assist your younger referee with
practical tactics and approaches to field management, including reacting
appropriately to adults and coaches who often do not know the rules as well as
they do.
Summary
The USSF course is currently available in the spring in Arlington.

register for
a clinic of your choice.
- ASA:
