All-Stars Win Observer Cup
The
Arlington Sparks, representing ASA, captured the Herndon Observer Cup
All-Stars tournament November 15-16.
The Sparks played well in four qualifying games Saturday. With each game
their play improved and their confidence grew. Seeded Sixth going into
Sunday's single elimination tournament, the Sparks put it all together.
Arlington bested Prince William 1-0 in the quarterfinal, and Herndon 1-0 in the semis. Abby Stroup scored the game winners
in each match, and Theresa Kossey anchored the defense in front of goalkeeper Akira Peck.
The Sparks dominated the games
with clever teamwork and midfield play. Standout performances from Klara Aizupitis, Monica Hernandez, and Haley Turner kept
their teammates composed and in control of each match.
The Sparks won the championship with a thrilling Penalty Kick shootout victory vs. Burke Athletic. The teams played to a hard
fought 0-0 draw during regulation time. With darkness approaching and nerves on edge the Arlington girls confidently stepped to
the penalty spot and drilled four goals to defeat Burke 4-3.
Klara Aizupitis, Haley Turner, Virginia Fresne, and Jasmine Bernhardt
scored the penalty kicks. Akira Peck made two saves in goal to secure the victory.
Coach Maria Walsh did an outstanding job leading the girls. Not only did the girls win the Cup, but they had lots of fun in
their practices session and scrimmages leading up to the tournament. The girls played an attractive style of soccer, were rewarded
with a tournament title, and strengthened friendships with their teammates who play on three separate ASA clubs.
Special thanks go
to the parents who supported the players, the Arlington Elite and Arlington Edge who scrimmaged the Sparks, and Andy Megas
for serving as All-Stars Manager.
