ASA
Families,
Boy, when we give our readers a challenge, they rise
to it!
We asked for suggestions to
name the family newsletter and got 118 entries from 21
readers.
Thanks to all who
entered the contest.
While it wasn't easy, what with so many
terrific suggestions, we did pick a winner:
Off The
Post, which you might have noticed on our masthead
above, was sent in by Steve Picot.
Congratulations Steve!
We wanted to mention some of our honorable
mentions, which will give you an idea of the creativity
lurking in the Arlington soccer community:

MESSAGE FROM COACH BOB,
Get out
there and play!
"Parents often ask me about
finding extra training or professional coaching for their
children.
Here's an idea that could achieve
several wonderful benefits at the same time (and save you some
money).
Go out and play soccer with your
children. Yes, you!
I know many parents will be
nervous about showing their skills (or lack there of!), but no
need to worry, you don't need to be a soccer star, or even a
great athlete - and your children will appreciate your
efforts.
Here are a few ideas & activities
to help:
- Parent throws the ball, player runs to retrieve it and
dribbles it back to the parent. Repeat. (See, no
super soccer skills needed.)
- Parent stands 5 - 15 yards away from the player, with
legs spread apart. Player tries to pass it through the
legs of the parent. Parent can even try to pass it
back through the legs of the player. First one to make
it through 5 times is the winner. Increase the
distance as needed.
- Parent is the goalkeeper. Kids will love to score
goals on you (so you don't even have to try that
hard).
The more your child gets out there and gets
touches on the ball, the more skill they will develop.
The better they are able to control the ball, the more they
will enjoy the game of soccer."
Now get out there and
play!

CONTEST FOR KIDS
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. But,
most of the world calls the game "football" or similar term
that tells what the game is about. (The Vietnamese term
"đá banh" literally means "kicking ball".)
Our Contest for Kids question is: Who invented the term "soccer" and
what does it mean?
The contest winner, selected
randomly from correct entries, will receive two tickets
to a DC United game of their choice (this season or next) or
two soccer
balls. ____________________________________________________________________
Contest Rules:
- Entries are accepted only from registered ASA youth
players.
- Entries are accepted by email only to offthepost@arlingtonsoccer.com.
- Entries must be e-mailed by 6:00 PM, Friday, October 19,
2007.
- The contest winner will be randomly selected from
correct entries.

QUESTIONS FOR ASA
Have questions about ASA soccer programs or about soccer in
general?
Here are questions received from Off the
Post issue number 1.
John Blevins, the Sports Programs Section Supervisor at
the Arlington County Parks, Recreation & Cultural
Resources, helped prepare the answer.
Why did the county attempt to fix
the TJ Upper Field planting new grass, then fail to maintain
it?
The County tried to maintain it, but without irrigation
or closing it down for an extended length of time, it is
hard to maintain turf coverage. PRCR is in the process
of exploring possible options for upgrading the field.
Why do they bother locking up such a
poorly maintained field that can't get much worse
anyway?
It can get worse by more use in inclement weather
conditions.
If the economics of putting in artificial turf
fields is favorable in the long run, why not resurface both
TJ fields? What are the costs and savings when the two
types of fields are compared?
Arlington County is drafting a community field's report
which will lay out this information. The Country tried
to install synthetic turf at TJ about 6 years ago but the
neighborhood community decided against it. There has
also been some discussions about the entire TJ field area
being "master planned" thus it would not make good sense at
this time to install synthetic turf at this
time. |
CONGRATS TO ASA STATE CUP TEAMS
Each fall, the Virginia Youth Soccer
Association (VYSA) holds its State Cup tournament for U15-U18
travel soccer teams from around the state.
ASA
is excited that six of its travel teams are still in Cup play,
reflecting on the high quality of our more competitive soccer
program. The next round of games will take place October
13, with these teams still competing:
- U15 Girls Blitz
- U16 Girls Pride
- U15 Boys FC ARL
- U15 Boys Venom
- U18 Boys Ambush
- U18 Boys Warriors
The champion of each age group
will move on to a Regional competition in late June in
Virginia Beach.
For more information on the
State Cup, the teams involved, and where their next games will
be played, visit the Arlington Travel Soccer
Club website.

SEND US YOUR
IDEAS
One of the great strengths of ASA is its
diversity, including the many new families that move into
Arlington every year from all over the world.
Many of you have probably participated in other
soccer programs in other parts of Virginia, other states and
even other countries. Did you see something there you
wished ASA would offer too? If so, we'd love to hear
from you!
The ASA Board is always open to suggestions
for ways to improve, expand and enhance our soccer programs
for the youth of Arlington County and Falls Church City, so
let us know what you would like to see.
Send
your suggestions to offthepost@arlingtonsoccer.com.
