The Juliet Grace Smith Foundation is thrilled to grow our relationship with Arlington Soccer Association. Many of Arlington’s families have been impacted by little ones who join the party just a little bit too early. This was the case when Juliet Grace was born in 2010 to ASA Coach Chris Smith and his wife Jess. Juliet was born 4 months premature and courageously faced a six-month regimen of daily life-or-death challenges. In her memory, a foundation was created: To enable a better experience for preemies and their families in the NICU. The primary work of Juliet's Foundation takes place in the Georgetown University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or NICU.
This year, Juliet's Foundation has made another commitment of $50,000 to expand the mental health support to NICU families. Juliet’s Foundation also sponsors the annual Juliet Grace Smith Memorial Scholarship for Courage, which assists Financial Aid eligible boys and girls in the ASA travel program who have demonstrated courage on and off the soccer field. This year’s awards were made to players in the 2008 and 2010 girls age groups.
Earlier this fall, Juliet was honored by the 2010 Girls as an honorary member of that age group. This was both a warm and humbling recognition and a welcome opportunity to inspire those who would have been Juliet’s teammates with some anecdotes about her brief but courageous life. In the image above, the Smith family is surrounded by Team Arlington’s 2010 girls - all modeling their Juliet Grace Smith Foundation Bag Tag.
In recognition of National Prematurity Awareness Day, on November 17th, we would like to kick off the public offering these special bag tags. They should be displayed proudly as a symbol of courage, on and off the soccer field. Proceeds from the sale of these bag tags will go directly to the Juliet Grace Smith Foundation and their philanthropic efforts. Bag tags for your family and team are available at the ASA Office (5210 Wilson Boulevard) and will be sold for $5 each. Teams are welcome to designate a representative to place bulk orders and coordinate one pick up from the office. Exact change cash or personal checks are accepted.
