Observations from the
weekend:
Spring
certainly seemed to be here on Saturday (before the rain
came) - and I'm guessing there were a few sunburned
faces and necks after a great day of soccer! Hope
you enjoyed your weekend.
A few
observations:
- With the warm weather,
remember to put on sunblock (you & the
players) and to make sure all players have plenty
to drink - before, during and after games and
practices.
As a team coach, make sure you
know the playing rules for your game. With the
under 6 and under 7 age groups, we play 4 vs. 4 for a
reason
(it is better for the
kids). For a complete listing of
rules by age group, visit: http://www.arlingtonsoccer.com/rules/home_rules.html
As I found out also, the
parking at the fields at Kenmore MS can be
tight. But there is plenty of space in the
parking lot in front of Carlin Springs Elementary
School.
I want to give a special
THANKS to all the great
parents who help out on the fields for the u6 and u7
games. I saw a lot of enthuastic parents who
were assisting all players, keeping the game moving
and really doing a fantastic job of seeing that the
kids enjoyed the game. Thanks for all your
efforts! |
Team of the Week:
Again, a tough selection from many teams
that showed great sportsmanship, enthusiasm and soccer
skill.
The Team of the
Week is the NW Lions under
6 team, coached by Amy
Westhoff. After a wonderful game, full of
effort and smiles by both teams, the Lions celebrated
with a rousing cheer for their opponent and the cutest
handshake line I have seen in a while!
Congratulations to the
NW Lions u6 team. A special
thanks to coach Amy - who, in addition to working
with this team, coaches the Lions under 7 team, has
a daughter on the ASA under 9 travel team - and has
another young soccer player waiting her turn at
home! What a busy coach! Thanks for your
efforts.
Runner up this week goes to the
Arlington Kiwanis under 11
Boys team - due to their robust cheering
section. "God save us from indifferent
soccer fans" is one of my favorite quotes
- and these ladies were certainly enjoying themselves
during this exciting
game. |

Activity of the
Week:
Coaches - hope you enjoy this fun
practice activity.
- Divide your group into
2 teams.
- One team lines up
along one sideline of a field; from corner to
corner.
- The other team lines up
along the other sideline.
- Make a goal on each end
line of the field.
- One team is attacking
one goal; the other team in the other
direction.
- Number each player, on
each team, #1 - #?
- Coach rolls a ball into
the middle of the field and shouts out a number,
"number
5!"
- That
number player, from each team, runs out on to the
field and plays 1 vs 1.
- Players return to
their teams after the ball goes out - or after a
goal is scored. Coach calls out a
new number.
- Coach calls out two
numbers, "numbers 3 and 7!"
- Both players, from each
team, run out and play 2 vs 2.
- Coach can call up to 4
numbers - 4 vs 4 game.
-
Outside players keep the ball in
play by passing to their
teammates.
Key coaching
points:
*Outside players pay
attention to help their teammates in the middle.
Pass back in to inside players.
*Inside
players play 1 vs 1 / 2 vs 2 / 3 vs 3 - work with
teammates.
*Stop and coach the
inside game - "spread out, good passing, control the
ball,
etc." | |
