Arlington Soccer Association for Arlington and Falls Church, Virginia Youth Soccer

Program Director: Bob Bigney

Program Overview

The ASA's Arlington Soccer Plus program was created in the spring of 2007.  The program provides a combination of after-school tutoring and soccer to children in need of academic assistance.

Nearly 100 students were enrolled in the program in the Fall of 2007 and the program has been a positive addition to the educational environment at each school for the children of Arlington.

The school has two separate days for tutoring and two separate days for soccer.  A total of 28 children enrolled in the program.  The program has strong support from the school faculty and looks forward to continue with it in the spring of 2008.

Barcroft Elementary School

Arlington, VA 22204

Principal:  Miriam Hughey-Guy

Coaches:  Alex Vallejos, Mike Walsh, Laura Hatton

Soccer Days:  Monday through Thursday

Tutoring Days:  Monday through Thursday

Training Times:  3:30-5:00 all days

School Overview:

Coaches Alex Vallejos (pictured), Mike Walsh (USSF "D" December 2007), and Laura Hatton contributed to the continuation of the program at Barcroft this past fall.  The program had a unique set-up in that the children were split into two groups of 12.  The younger children would have soccer on Monday and Tuesday and have tutoring on Wednesday and Thursday.  The reverse would be true for the older children.  Coach Alex Vallejos is a coach in ASA's recreational program and has a unique relationship with the school's faculty because he himself is a former student at Barcroft Elementary.   Laura Hatton returned for second season at Barcroft and Mike Walsh, a former NCAA Division 1 player, brought his fantastic knowledge of the sport to the kids at Barcroft.
