The High School Girls team Storm recently visited various cities in El Salvador as part of a cultural and sports exchange sponsored by the Arlington Sister City Association, San Miguel Committee. As part of the exchange, five players from schools in San Miguel were chosen to play with Storm. This was a rewarding experience for the Storm players and for the guest players as they recognized all of the many things they have in common even though they are separated by many miles. Four games were played at local fields, after which the teams were invited to have lunch together. Storm distributed to the teams they played soccer items generously donated by the Arlington Soccer Association.
The trip was not just about playing soccer. The Storm were also scheduled to visit an orphanage in San Miguel. The team had lunch with the children there and distributed more items, some donated by Arlington Soccer Association, and other gifts that the team purchased prior to the trip. The children were delighted to have the team spend time with them and were excited to receive so many gifts.
Storm also visited a class where selected students from multiple middle schools learn English, taught by a teacher from the Arlington County public schools. On this visit Storm participated by speaking English with the students in that program.
During their stay, the team went to a couple different beaches for a day of leisure and had a great time swimming in the ocean and playing on the beach. One of the beaches was a private beach where they had the ocean and the beach to themselves. The team also visited the base of Chaparrastique, one of El Salvador’s 23 volcanoes.
This was a rewarding experience for not only the players from here and El Salvador, but for the coaches and chaperones as well. The team is currently planning for a return visit in July 2018, as two other high schools would like to be included in an exchange.
Thank you to coaches Mauricio Coreas and Jose Martinez for organizing and leading the exchange, the Arlington Sister City Association for help in funding, and everyone who donated items for the players to take. Congratulations, Storm players, for your awesome trip and your ambassadorship!
